From Adversity to Achievement
In the a rural of Mujibnagar upazila, Meherpur, resides a resilient woman name Shefali Mallick,. She lives with her husband and their two daughters. Shefali’s life has been marked by numerous trials and tribulations.
She encountered financial hurdles due to her husband Nicholas’s disability, compelling Shefali to take charge of household affairs. She ventured into household work for neighbours as a means of sustenance. Their path was laden with challenges, including battles with leprosy and poverty.
In the face of adversity, Shefali found a ray of hope through the AEP project partner SHALOM, which provided her with a sewing machine, offering a source of income. Eventually, Shefali secured employment as a tailor at Bollovepur Mission Hospital, and through SHALOM’s advocacy efforts, her family now resides in a sturdy government-provided concrete house.
Her employment at Bollovepur Mission Hospital served as a beacon of hope. Starting with a modest salary, Shefali’s diligence led to a significant increase by 2023. Meanwhile, her husband initially worked as a manual van driver to support their livelihood. With financial support from the self-help group and external sources, they managed to purchase a battery-operated van. Income from the van now sustains the family’s needs and loan repayments.
Reflecting on the pandemic, Shefali recalls the hardships of begging for food to feed her family. However, brighter days have arrived; her daughter Ritu has completed her Secondary School Certificate (SSC) exam and enrolled in a computer training course facilitated by SHALOM. With Ritu back in school and Nicholas in improved health, Shefali finds solace in moments spent together, cherishing rides in their van.
Shefali’s empathy extends beyond her struggles; she advocates for the rights and recognition of disabled individuals. In her pursuit to empower others, Shefali teaches sewing freely to other women and advocates for community members in need. Her dream is to join SHALOM’s outreach efforts, using their van to raise awareness about leprosy and the importance of early medical intervention.
Overflowing with gratitude, Shefali acknowledges the support of those who stood by her side, embodying the essence of resilience and hope in the face of adversity.
