The Journey of The Leprosy Mission International- Bangladesh
The Leprosy Mission International-Bangladesh (TLMI-B) is an International Non-Government Organization (INGO) registered in Bangladesh since 1991 with the vision of “Leprosy defeated, lives transformed.” The roots of TLMI-B trace back to 1977-78 when the Danish Santal Mission initiated leprosy services in the northern district of Nilphamari and later through Danish Bangladesh Leprosy Mission responding to a significant outbreak of leprosy in the region until handed over to The Leprosy Mission in 1996.
Since 1994, TLMI-B has been a key partner in the National Leprosy Program (NLP), implementing projects focused on leprosy control, prevention and rehabilitation. Our work includes specialized care at DBLM Hospital, Community-based initiatives, advocacy and research. Notably, we diagnose 60% of the country’s annual leprosy cases, contributing significantly to global and national efforts to defeat leprosy and improve the lives of affected communities.
United in the fight against leprosy, TLMI-B works hand-in-hand with the National Leprosy Program as well as the Leprosy and TB Coordinating Committee (LTCC) to ensure that no one is left behind. Our collective efforts are driving progress toward a leprosy-free Bangladesh.
TLMI-B is a member of TLM Global Fellowship and to the dimension of leprosy, work is only next to India in Asia. In addition to TLM Global Fellowship, TLMI-B is a member of Disabled Peoples’ International (DPI), ILEP (International Federation of Anti Leprosy Associations), NNN (Neglected Tropical Disease NGO Network) and the Micah Network. TLMI-B is also a member of the National Forum of Organizations Working with the Disabled (NFOWD).
With a dedicated team of 252 employees, TLMI-B is actively implementing 27 projects in 40 districts across 8 divisions, making a significant impact on the lives of people affected by leprosy.
