A Journey of Resilience and Hope
Joli Akther (pseudonym), a spirited 11-year-old girl, is from the beautiful landscapes of northern Bangladesh. Her life took a tragic turn when she lost her father at an early age. Left with two elder brothers, Joli’s family struggled to make ends meet. Their primary source of income was day labour, which they balanced alongside their studies. The closure of schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted Joli’s education, leading her to seek private tuition from a local girl.
On the way to private tuition, she was raped by a man and terrified into silence. Her health deteriorated in the aftermath. Observing Joli’s suffering, her mother eventually persuaded her to share the truth about her suffering. Medical tests confirmed what Joli had feared: she was pregnant. Her brother took swift action, filing a case against the perpetrator.
When the man was behind bars, facing justice for his heinous crime, Joli took shelter at the Hagar Center, where she received counseling and compassionate care. Despite numerous complications, she bravely gave birth to a baby girl.
The legal process brought justice for the accused, but Joli had to decide: keep her daughter or give her up. She chose the latter, believing that her child would find a loving home and grow up with dignity.
Despite the pain in her heart, Joli resolved to move forward. She returned home, determined to resume her studies. Her courage and resilience serve as a beacon of hope, reminding us that even in the darkest moments, there is strength to rebuild and heal.
